Centenary of Borders' "Voice of Rugby", Bill McLaren

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that 16 October 2023 would have been the 100th birthday of the Borders-born rugby commentator, the late Bill McLaren; notes that Hawick Museum is holding a special exhibition, which runs until 27 November, to mark the centenary of his birth; understands that the Bill McLaren Foundation (BMF), which was set up to honour his legacy, is behind the exhibition; recognises that McLaren was commentating on rugby from 1953 to 2002, when he retired; further recognises his accomplishments of being the first non-international rugby player to be a part of the International Rugby Hall of Fame, and that he was awarded an OBE, MBE and CBE, and notes that Scottish Borders Council’s Inspire Learning team worked in partnership with Live Borders, the BMF, Hawick Museum and Hawick RFC to deliver a live online lesson to over 1,000 pupils from 45 classes across the Borders about McLaren’s life and legacy as the "voice of rugby".
