Calton Community Centre in Glasgow Celebrates 10th Birthday

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Calton Heritage and Learning Centre (CHLC), based in Glasgow's east end, on its 10th birthday; notes the efforts made by the community to create the CHLC, which, it understands, now plays a vital role in the vibrant life of Calton and in the east end in general; understands that the CHLC, on London Road, opened its doors on 1 November 2013 after years of campaigning to deliver a much-needed Calton community hub; further understands that, since opening, the CHLC has become a success, acting as the main host of local activities; understands that the date of the opening of the CHLC in 2013 was chosen specially, as it marked the 124th anniversary of the collapse at the Templeton Carpet Factory, when, in 1889, during the construction of a new extension to Templeton & Co’s nearby carpet factory, unusually high winds caused a section of the facade to collapse onto an adjoining weaving shed, and further understands with sadness that workers in the shed at the time and 29 women lost their lives, and that the names of those who died in the tragedy are inscribed on the paving outside the CHLC.
