Condemning Glasgow Life Museum and Collection Cuts

Lodged by Paul Sweeney (Scottish Labour) Standard Motion 4 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament notes the reported calls from Glasgow Archaeological Society, the Department of Archaeology at the University of Glasgow and The Prehistoric Society for an immediate stop to the proposed cuts and job losses that it considers have been inflicted on Glasgow Life Museums and Collections; believes that the reported cuts of 30% to staffing will impact museums and galleries in the city across the board, from front-facing services to curatorial services in Glasgow’s world-renowned cultural hubs, including Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and The Burrell Collection; considers that cuts would threaten the access to artefacts for the three organisations mentioned and that it would, ultimately, negatively impact on their research; further considers that cuts will restrict the opportunities for university students and school children today and in the future; believes that, for people from impoverished areas, Glasgow’s museums are often the only access they have to art and cultural enrichment, and considers that job losses are unjustifiable and must be reconsidered.
