The motion

That the Parliament recognises International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (Solidarity Day) on 29 November 2023; believes that this is a day that provides an opportunity for the international community to refocus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remains unresolved, and that the Palestinian people are yet to attain what it sees as their inalienable right to self-determination, the right to national independence and sovereignty and the right of return of refugees; notes that Solidarity Day has been marked annually since 1978; further notes that, in 2023, the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) will hold a Special Meeting to commemorate the event at UN HQ in New York, with other events to commemorate Solidarity Day also being held at other UN venues worldwide; understands that the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) called for a ceasefire and an end to the violence against civilians in Gaza during its annual rally and march on 26 November 2023; further understands that other events expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people were held across Scotland during the weekend prior to Solidarity Day, including in Aberdeen, Dundee and Montrose in the North East Scotland region, as well as in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dumfries; understands that, on this day every year, the UN urges immediate action to grant Palestinians sovereignty, and an end to Israeli occupation, and highlights what it sees as the urgency of this action in 2023 more than any other year.
