Port Glasgow Nursery First in Scotland to Receive Barnardo’s Award
The motion
That the Parliament commends St John’s Nursery in Port Glasgow on becoming the first nursery in Scotland to receive a prestigious award for looking after the social and emotional wellbeing of children in their care; understands that the staff received training from Barnardo’s Scotland to implement the principles of social and emotional learning (SEL) into every aspect of pre-school life and that this resulted in the nursery being the first in Scotland, and one of the first in the UK, to be given an SEL Worldwide Model Pre-School Award from Barnardo’s; notes that staff also received training in the PATHS Programme for Schools, which uses play to support children from a young age to raise awareness of their feelings and helps them to develop self-regulation skills; applauds the commitment of St John’s Nursery staff to help children in their care develop these key skills, which, it believes, can help them all throughout their lives, and hopes that their success in this area will encourage other nurseries in the Greenock and Inverclyde constituency, and across Scotland, to undertake this training.
