The Widening Gender Pain Gap

The motion

That the Parliament notes the findings of Nurofen’s Gender Pain Gap Index Report: Year 2, which was published in November 2023; understands that the "Gender Pain Gap" refers to the number of women who feel that their pain has been ignored or dismissed by healthcare professionals, compared with the number of men; notes with concern that the report, based on the insights of more than 5,000 UK respondents, has observed over the past year that the Gender Pain Gap has widened, from 7% to 11%; acknowledges the finding that women are experiencing longer diagnosis times than men, even when reporting the same pain; understands that many of the women surveyed felt that gender bias and gender stereotypes meant that men’s pain was taken more seriously by healthcare professionals; further understands that more women than men are likely to experience pains such as headaches, abdominal or stomach pains and migraines, but that nearly one-quarter of those women surveyed have not tried to seek a diagnosis for the pain they experience, compared with 13% of men; considers that more must be done to address the barriers to women receiving treatment for pain, and believes in the report’s mission to improve pain management and close the "Gender Pain Gap".
