Physics Powering the Green Economy

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the publication of the Physics Powering the Green Economy report by the Institute of Physics; is concerned that 83% of physicists surveyed believe that the UK is not on track to meet the 2050 net zero target, in light of current actions; believes that, although Scotland reportedly has relative strengths within the UK and Ireland in wind and hydro power, as well as in carbon capture and storage, it has the potential to, and must, do significantly more in bioenergy, geothermal, hydrogen, solar and carbon storage; understands that physics knowledge and skills are crucial not only for modelling and monitoring the nature and scale of the continuing climate challenge, but also for the innovation to develop, operate and maintain the clean technologies needed to address it; sees the development of such technologies as not only a moral imperative, but an economic opportunity for Scotland; values the practical assessment of the feasibility, readiness and potential impact of current and future specific technologies set out in the report, and calls for a long-term systems approach, including targeted support for physics research and development, business innovation, skills, infrastructure, innovative financial approaches and international co-ordination.
