The Legacy of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide

The motion

That the Parliament marks 9 December as International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, an annual observance marking its 75th year in 2023; understands that this year’s theme is "A Living Force in World Society: The Legacy of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide", which seeks to highlight some of the achievements that emanate from the Convention, showcasing its legacy and reminding of the efforts that led to its drafting and adoption, but also reflecting on the challenges that remain for its effective implementation today; recognises that genocide is still a threat in the world today and that, around the world, populations remain at risk of this crime, and further recognises that the need to invest in prevention, as envisaged by the Convention drafters 75 years ago, remains as relevant as ever.
