Universal Declaration of Human Rights Turns 75

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that 10 December 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR); notes that the theme of this day is freedom, equality and justice for all; considers that the inalienable rights to which it believes everyone is entitled as human beings, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status, must be upheld; believes that many of these rights are at risk due to what it sees as a rise in authoritarianism, populist right-wing nationalism, and because of political and media figures who, it considers, demonise and scapegoat minorities; commends international human rights organisations, such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Save the Children, Reporters Without Borders, and many more, for their work in upholding human rights protections and holding those in power to account, and urges all those in positions of power to use this day to recommit to the UDHR and act in accordance with its principles.
