Patrick Doyle, from Birkenshaw, Celebrates an Astonishing 50-year Career

That the Parliament congratulates Birkenshaw-born composer, Patrick Doyle, on his prolific 50-year career in film, television, radio and theatre, which was recently celebrated in a successful series of concerts, entitled Music from the Movies, in November 2023 at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall and the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, during which the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) performed pieces from some of his most famous film scores, while raising funds for what it sees as pioneering outreach programs; recognises what it considers to be the extraordinarily high regard in which Patrick is held across the globe, including being nominated for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes, one BAFTA and two Césars, as well as receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from both the World Soundtrack Awards and Scottish BAFTAs, the Henry Mancini Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the PRS Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Music and a 2018 honorary doctorate from the University of the West of Scotland; acknowledges the unique honour that Patrick holds as being the first Scottish composer in history to be commissioned to compose the Coronation March, which was performed live at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023, to a global audience of nearly half a billion viewers; applauds Patrick’s dedication to nurturing Scotland’s next generation of musical talent within his recent appointments as the RSNO's 2023-24 Composer in Residence, lead mentor of the RSNO’s Film Composers Lab, and new patron of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Juniors Orchestra; notes that Patrick’s early education was provided at St John’s Primary School, Uddingston, and Our Lady’s High School, Motherwell, before he graduated from the then Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and applauds Scotland’s public educational system for, it believes, providing the foundations for Patrick’s astonishing work, particularly his peripatetic tutors and school music teachers and college lecturers, who inspired a young man from Birkenshaw to globally make his mark on the film industry and, with his music, reach an appreciative global audience of over a billion people.
