Celebrating the Return of The Salmon

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the 40th anniversary of the return of salmon to the River Clyde; understands that, in the early 1800s, Glasgow drew its drinking water from the river and its citizens swam in the waters at Glasgow Green, but that by the 1860s, the Clyde had become one of the most polluted rivers in Britain, thus making the salmon, commemorated in the Glasgow coat of arms as one of St Mungo’s miracles, extinct from the river; recognises the Clyde River Foundation’s contribution to scientific research, education, community engagement, and advocacy of the river, and praises the Foundation for the work that it has done since 2001, with 40,000 school children from across the Glasgow City region in its hands-on learning and education programmes, Clyde in the Classroom, Meet Your River and Flying Fish.
