Multi-million-pound Funding for Medical Device Manufacturing Centre
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the news that the Medical Device Manufacturing Centre (MDMC) has been awarded £3.35 million from Scottish Enterprise; understands that the funding will enable the MDMC to continue supporting and elevating novel medical device innovation and to develop more sustainable and environmentally sensitive medical device manufacturing techniques; highlights that the MDMC was launched in April 2020 to provide resources, facilities and engineering, regulatory and funding expertise to early-stage entrepreneurs in order to help address current challenges in healthcare, including the NHS; commends the MDMC for supporting over 150 SMEs since the centre’s launch by reducing the development time of products and securing significant investments for innovators; understands that services provided by the MDMC are free-of-charge to Scottish companies, as a way of fully realising medical device innovation and improving patient care in Scotland; notes that recent MDMC clients included Intellipalp, which is developing a prototype of a prostate cancer diagnostics device, and ConfiPlus, which has been taken through the first steps of NHS accreditation of its stoma bag accompaniment; acknowledges that the MDMC is a consortium of leading institutions, including Heriot-Watt University, where it is headquartered, as well as the University of Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow and Robert Gordon University; understands that the MDMC will act as the industry-facing arm of Heriot-Watt University’s new global research institute for excellence in health and care technologies, and wishes the MDMC all the best for the future.
