Pre-Payment Meters

The motion

That the Parliament expresses concern at reported figures by Citizens Advice suggesting that 800,000 households across the UK went without gas or electricity for more than 24 hours in 2023 because they could not afford meter top-ups; condemns the practice of forcibly installing prepayment energy meters in the homes of people who have fallen into debt with their energy supplier; understands that energy charges for those on prepayment meters are normally higher; urges the UK Government to extend the temporary ban on the practice, which ended on 8 January 2024, into a permanent ban, and to reintroduce the £400 energy bill rebate; believes that nobody in what it sees as an energy-rich country like Scotland should be living in energy poverty, and considers that this situation can only be properly addressed by Scotland becoming an independent nation with full control over its abundant energy resources.
