Federation of Small Businesses Submission on Electricity Standing Charges
The motion
That the Parliament notes the recent submission to Ofgem’s consultation on energy standing charges by the Federation of Small Businesses, which reportedly highlights what it sees as the differential impact of high standing charges on small businesses; understands that small businesses have seen energy standing charges skyrocket, including reports of one small Scottish tech firm that has seen its electricity standing charge increase from 32 pence to £7.50 per day, adding £2,500 to its annual electricity bill before it even turns its lights on; further understands that the situation for domestic customers is similar, with electricity standing charges increasing to 62.08 pence per day in southern Scotland, and 59.38 pence per day in northern Scotland for domestic customers, and calls on the UK Government to fix an energy standing charge system that, it believes, currently punishes small businesses and domestic users and favours big business.
