The George Ward Collection – Exploring 1970s Maryhill

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the opening of the photo exhibit, The George Ward Collection, at Maryhill Burgh Halls on 3 February 2024; understands that the photography collection depicts life in Maryhill in the 1970s, capturing a Maryhill suspended in time, invoking nostalgia for a long-lost city landscape, along Maryhill Road and beyond; recognises what it sees as the importance of The George Ward Collection in preserving the visual history of Maryhill and Glasgow; understands that a pre-opening reception on 2 February 2024 provided an opportunity for the family and friends of George, as well as those who helped curate the exhibition, to celebrate the contribution that Mr Ward made to preserving the rich social history of Maryhill for future generations; regrettably notes that George passed away in 2022 before witnessing his exhibition; commends George's efforts in the 1970s to capture images for future generations, including old 35mm film photographs of streets and canal landscapes and a selection of footage filmed using 8mm and Super 8 cine cameras, which, it understands, will also be on display; thanks George’s family for making his work available to the public; understands that it will be on display until 11 May 2024; encourages residents of Maryhill and those further afield to take the opportunity to enjoy George's photography, and thanks the Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust for its continued efforts to highlight local artists in public exhibitions.
