Screening for Genetic Haemochromatosis Being Offered to 25,000 Households in Aberdeenshire
The motion
That the Parliament recognises that Haemochromatosis UK is offering free screening for a genetic disorder known as genetic haemochromatosis or the "Celtic curse" to people living in Aberdeenshire; recognises that this is being done in memory by the family of a local Aberdeenshire resident, who sadly died from the genetic condition in 2023; understands that genetic haemochromatosis is a condition that causes too much iron to build up in the body, and, if untreated, the disease can cause life-threatening health complications; further understands that genetic haemochromatosis is the most common undiagnosed genetic condition in Scotland, with recent research suggesting that around 1 in 113 people in Scotland are pre-disposed to the condition, but fewer than 1 in 20 have been diagnosed; understands that Haemochromatosis UK is contacting 25,000 households across Aberdeenshire by post to offer free genetic health checks for the condition, and wishes Haemochromatosis UK well as it raises awareness and encourages more people to get screened, as it believes that early diagnosis saves lives.
