National Day of Reflection 2024

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the National Day of Reflection, falling on 3 March 2024; acknowledges that the National Day of Reflection is in support of thousands of people who have been bereaved, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to remember family, friends, neighbours and colleagues who have died; encourages people to take part in the day of reflection by holding a minute's silence of contemplation at midday; notes that petals will be available from Marie Curie for those participating to write the name of a person who they are remembering and share on social media; recognises the UK Commission on Bereavement’s reported key findings that, in Scotland in 2020 and 2021, an estimated 649,000 people were bereaved, and that this was an additional 64,000 bereaved people compared to what would have been expected, based on the five-year average from 2015 to 2019; acknowledges the findings of the Commission that over 40% of adult respondents who wanted formal bereavement support did not receive any; understands that Marie Curie research projects that 10,000 more people in Scotland will die with palliative care needs by 2040; believes that this will result in an increased number of people requiring specialist bereavement support; recognises what it sees as the collective responsibility of the Scottish Government, local government, education providers, and employers to enable better access to the appropriate support through all stages of bereavement, and considers that this can include support before a loved one has died.
