Calling for Scotland to Plant Not Burn Trees

The motion

That the Parliament expresses grave concern over the proposed 41% cut to the woodland creation budget, which it considers risks significant damage to Scottish Government commitments to combating climate change and nature restoration and risks the destruction of millions of tree saplings that are waiting to be planted; believes that this goes against the scientific evidence on the importance of expanding forests to meet emissions targets through cost-effective carbon sequestration; further believes that the people of Scotland do not support burning viable tree saplings while the global climate emergency intensifies; agrees with the calls from industry and environmental groups for the Scottish Government to rethink what they see as these counterproductive cuts, which undermine confidence built over years, threaten skilled forestry jobs and long-term growth of the sector and protection of nature, and asks that the Scottish Government reaffirms its commitment to the Scottish Forestry Strategy and previously published woodland creation targets.
