Crookfur Primary School Pupils Win Marine Litter Competition

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates pupils at Crookfur Primary School on winning a national competition to address problems with marine litter; understands that P5 pupils at the school were awarded the prize of Best Overall Project at Keep Scotland Beautiful's "STEM the Flow" competition, and that the key aim of this initiative is to encourage young people to formulate solutions that can stop marine litter at source; notes that the pupils at Crookfur Primary evaluated the impact of discarded items on the Capering Burn in Newton Mearns, and researched current litter management techniques in rivers; recognises that the pupils built on their research through the use of computer-aided design (CAD) software to devise a machine that could manoeuvre across the burn to remove litter and stop it from reaching the sea; acknowledges that the efforts from pupils also included the need to safeguard wildlife in the burn; commends the pupils at Crookfur Primary for winning what it understands is the top prize at Keep Scotland Beautiful's "STEM the Flow" awards, and further commends what it sees as the commitment from the young people to protect the marine environment.
