World Day of Social Justice 2024

That the Parliament commemorates World Day of Social Justice on 20 February, which seeks to place social justice at the centre of international, national and regional policy agendas; understands that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) marked this day with six events held in major cities around the world; further understands that the ILO unanimously adopted the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization on 10 June 2008 as its third major statement of principles and policies since its constitution of 1919; applauds the Declaration’s development of the Decent Work concept and agenda and its highlighting of what it sees as the importance of sustainable enterprises in creating income opportunities for all; believes, along with the UN General Assembly, that social development and social justice are indispensable for the achievement of global and domestic peace and security, and further believes that they cannot be attained without respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms; welcomes proposals to advance social justice by improving the governance of work, reforming institutions and extending social protections; considers that such progress is threatened by persistent injustices, labour insecurity, high levels of inequality and unravelling social contracts, and believes that all these threats are exacerbated by global crises; further welcomes what it sees as the growing support for a Global Coalition for Social Justice, which, it understands, now includes 100 partners, and urges the Scottish Government and Scottish organisations to play their part in making it a success in order to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and Decent Work Agenda.
