North Lanarkshire Council Awarded Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Local Authority Award

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates North Lanarkshire Council on being awarded gold status in the Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Local Authority Award; understands that this award is the first of its kind, and that it is reflective of what it sees as North Lanarkshire Council's commendable commitment to supporting breastfeeding in the workplace and wider community; notes that, over the past eight years, there has been a welcome 8.8 percentage point increase in babies being breastfed by their six-to-eight-week review, and, it believes, an invaluable12.3 percentage point increase in the number of babies breastfed in their first days that livein the most deprived areas; commends what it considers to be the council’s proactive measures to support breastfeeding, which include the introduction of policies encouraging breastfeeding upon return to work, appointing community breastfeeding champions, foster care and social work training, all early years establishments and most schools achieving associated Breastfeeding Friendly awards, and ensuring that public facilities offer welcoming breastfeeding spaces and facilities; applauds all of those involved in creating what it sees as this far-reaching positive impact on the culture and practice of breastfeeding across North Lanarkshire, and supports giving children the best possible start in life and positively impacting what it sees as long-standing health inequalities.
