Celebrating an Inspirational and Influential Woman in the North East for International Women’s Day

That the Parliament recognises International Women’s Day on 8 March 2024, which is an annual celebration of women's social, economic, political and cultural achievements that honours women around the world who have campaigned for enhancing women's rights, and who continue to do so today; celebrates what it sees as the contributions of a remarkable woman, Isabella Fyvie Mayo, who settled in the north east of Scotland, who was a poet and novelist and who died in Aberdeen 110 years ago; acknowledges that Isabella was also a reformer and campaigner who, after settling in Aberdeen, became the first woman to be elected to a public board in the city – the Aberdeen School Board; believes that she was an important figure in the women's suffrage movement and was also an anti-imperialist and anti-racist campaigner, who opposed anti-immigration sentiments and campaigned for a more inclusive society; understands that Isabella co-founded the Society for the Recognition of the Brotherhood of Man, an organisation that opposed racial discrimination; further understands that Isabella was a pacifist, anti-imperialist and anti-racist; believes that these values and beliefs are still very much needed in the world today; applauds Isabella’s efforts, and believes that her legacy is an inspiration to women across Scotland.
