Global Intergenerational Week 2024

The motion

That the Parliament marks and celebrates Global Intergenerational Week 2024, which will run from 24 to 30 April, led by Generations Working Together; believes that Scotland is a nation that values fairness, equality and community, and what it considers to be the importance of building a society in which people of all ages can live happy, healthy and connected lives; notes the belief that intergenerational work is critical, reinforcing the campaign’s 2024 theme, "Intergenerational practice is not just nice, it’s essential"; recognises what it sees as the essential role of intergenerational practice in tackling social isolation and loneliness and combatting ageism, in line with recommendations by the World Health Organization in 2023, and supporting the development of young people, instilling in them, it believes, greater confidence and a sense of social responsibility; believes that intergenerational work reinforces Scottish social values, by promoting understanding, empathy and respect between people of different ages; acknowledges what it considers to be the potential social return on investment that intergenerational practice can offer; notes the calls for Scotland to become an "intergenerational nation", and further notes the calls for the Scottish Government, local authorities and all other relevant bodies to prioritise intergenerational work and develop policies and initiatives that promote intergenerational collaboration and understanding, across a range of policy areas, including health and social care, early years and education, and community planning.
