International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda; understands that the day of reflection, taking place on 7 April 2024, marks the start of the 1994 genocide, which lasted for the 100-day period to mid-July 1994; remembers and reflects on the over a million lives reportedly lost during the systematic killing that took place over that period; understands that those killed were overwhelmingly Tutsi, but also included Hutu and others who opposed the genocide; notes that 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide; believes that it is important to honour those who were murdered, and to reflect on what it sees as the suffering of those who survived; recognises the lasting impact of the genocide on survivors, particularly widows, orphans and victims of sexual violence, and the challenges that, it considers, they still face today; notes that the national mourning period in Rwanda will begin with Kwibuka, the national commemoration, on 7 April 2024, and will conclude with Liberation Day on 4 July, and supports efforts that promote remembrance and raise awareness and education about the genocide to ensure that the lessons of such events are learned.
