Purple Day 2024

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 26 March marks Epilepsy Awareness Day, better known as Purple Day; understands that epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in the world, with more than 58,000 people in Scotland currently living with the condition; considers that people with epilepsy are more likely to develop mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety as a result of the condition; understands that, while children and older people are more likely to develop the condition, anyone can develop epilepsy at any time in their life, irrespective of their age, gender or background, with every individual’s epilepsy being different; further understands that epilepsy is defined as the tendency to have repeated seizures, which start in the brain; understands that a seizure can be a one-off occurrence triggered by extreme events, such as sustaining a serious head injury, and it is estimated that one in 20 people will have a one-off seizure during their lifetime; notes that Epilepsy Scotland takes the opportunity each Purple Day to encourage people to talk about epilepsy and to try and dispel myths and stigma attached to the condition, and recognises that landmarks such as Marischal College, in Aberdeen, will be lit purple to mark the day.
