60th Anniversary of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the 60th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) Security Council unanimously adopting resolution 186 on 4 March 1964, which noted that the then situation in Cyprus, of violence between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, was "likely to threaten international peace and security", and that this resolution brought about the establishment of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP); understands that the mandate of UNFICYP remains in place to prevent a recurrence of fighting, to contribute to the maintenance and restoration of law and order, and to contribute to a return to normal conditions; recognises what it considers to be the sacrifices made over the past 60 years by military, police and civilian personnel from 43 countries working under the UN banner, including the ultimate sacrifice paid by the 187 peacekeepers who gave their lives, in the service of peace on the island; understands that UNFICYP is today one of the longest-running UN peacekeeping missions; commends all those who have contributed to the work of UNFICYP over six decades, including many personnel deployed with the Royal Regiment of Scotland, and its antecedent regiments, and continues to hope for an agreed, just and lasting settlement in Cyprus.
