United Nations Universal Periodic Review of China's Human Rights Record

The motion

That the Parliament notes with concern the recent United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) into the human rights record of China; understands that multiple UN member states brought forward recommendations highlighting concerns regarding reported human rights breaches committed by the Chinese state in a number of areas, particularly in relation to the alleged oppression of the Tibetan people; further understands that there was an increase of 11 member states, since 2018, that made recommendations to end restrictions on the Tibetan language, harassment of human rights defenders, interference with Tibetan cultural and religious rights, as well as abolishing the residential boarding school system for Tibetan children; understands that concerns regarding the alleged similar treatment of the Uyghur people were also raised by member states at the UPR; commends the work of Tibetan solidarity groups, including Free Tibet, and of the Central Tibetan Administration, which, it considers, have worked tirelessly to bring human rights abuses reportedly committed by China to the attention of the international community.
