World Water Day 2024

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges World Water Day on 22 March 2024 and recognises what it sees as the importance of this day; considers that, due to climate change, communities across the country are becoming increasingly susceptible to water scarcity and floods; further considers, therefore, that it is important to take action against these concerns, in a step to protect numerous communities; fears for the affected communities that have endured both periods or water scarcity and floods, such as residents of Castleton Cottages near Eassie in Angus, who have reportedly experienced repeated flooding over recent months, and residents in Aberdeenshire with private water supplies that have reportedly faced water shortages in recent years; understands that these increasingly common conditions have adverse implications for Scottish industries such as agriculture and whisky production; considers that water scarcity and floods are a large concern globally, with UNICEF reporting that displaced individuals in Gaza are only able to access 1.5 to two litres of water a day, while, it understands, three litres are required for survival; believes that Scotland has a unique skill set and expertise in water management, including at Dundee University’s UNESCO Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science; hopes to see Scotland become a leader that will take steps to ensure water access and flood relief worldwide, and to champion what it sees as this important issue, and further hopes that these issues will form part of ongoing parliamentary discussions on improving access to human rights.
