NHS Grampian and Partners to Run Pilot Study to Prevent Insomnia in New Breast Cancer Patients

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that NHS Grampian is taking part in a pilot study to improve night-time sleep for newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients; notes that the study will examine the use of Sleep Restriction Therapy, which helps to improve sleep by stabilising patterns and reducing time spent awake in bed, and will be delivered during cancer treatment by breast cancer research nurses; understands that Sleep Restriction Therapy has been used successfully to treat chronic insomnia in breast cancer survivors who have completed cancer treatment; further understands that one fifth of breast cancer survivors experience insomnia, with sleep difficulties often beginning at the time of diagnosis and can become worse during cancer treatment, and continuing long into cancer survival; notes that NHS Grampian along with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and researchers at the University of Strathclyde are aiming to recruit 40 patients to participate in the study from April 2024; notes that, if successful, the pilot could be expanded to a full-scale insomnia prehabilitation trial, and wishes NHS Grampian, its partners and new breast cancer patients taking part in the study all the very best.
