Commending the Documentary, "The Push", on Channel 4

That the Parliament commends the documentary on Channel 4, The Push: Murder on the Cliff, produced by Candour TV, concerning the murder of Fawziyah Javed in Edinburgh by her husband and the subsequent criminal justice proceedings; recognises that the two-part programme demonstrated the process of a criminal trial and police investigation, the requirements of evidence, the matter of the burden of proof on the Crown and the requirement of proof “beyond reasonable doubt”, and the role of the judge and that of the jury, which has, it believes, given the public a greater understanding of the Scottish criminal justice system; considers that the horrendous murder of Fawziyah Javed, along with the subsequent court proceedings, was portrayed with sensitivity, whilst showing the impact on Fawziyah’s family and demonstrating how domestic abuse and coercive control can be identified in relationships; commends those involved in producing this programme, and expresses its horror that her husband’s reported coercive control finally ended in the murder of his young pregnant wife, leaving her parents and wider family to try to live with the loss and grief, from which, it understands, the conviction and life sentence that her husband received has only given them some small comfort.
