Celebrating the 112th Birthday of Scotland’s Oldest Cinema

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the 112th birthday of the Hippodrome Cinema in Bo’ness; understands that having been designed by local film-maker, Louis Dickson, and local architect, Matthew Steele, the Hippodrome opened on 11 March 1912, making it Scotland’s first and oldest purpose-built cinema; further understands that the Hippodrome has undergone several transformations over its long history, including a brief stint as a bingo hall in 1975 and a full restoration and reopening in 2009; welcomes what it sees as the positive contribution that the Hippodrome continues to make to the town of Bo’ness’ heritage, culture and local economy, by promoting and showing a mixture of international blockbusters and works by local creators, and wishes the Hippodrome, and everyone who enjoys it, many more years of cinematic magic.
