Recognising World Rewilding Day 2024
The motion
That the Parliament recognises World Rewilding Day on 20 March 2024; notes that this day celebrates the capacity of rewilding to restore ecosystems in order to tackle the nature and climate emergencies, and secure a thriving future for all; understands that the 2024 World Rewilding Day focuses on the theme of Hope Into Action, which emphasises how all kinds of rewilders are taking action to bring nature back; believes that Scotland’s ecosystems have been affected by intensive management, over exploitation, neglect and pollution; celebrates the efforts of people across Scotland to restore nature, including through over 150 rewilding projects, from community woodlands to landscape-scale partnerships; believes that Scotland could be the world’s first rewilding nation, with nature flourishing across 30% of Scotland’s land and seas; understands that people, land, nature and culture are intertwined in Scotland; considers that rewilding can bring a cascade of benefits to communities and society, including boosting jobs and health, supporting community wealth building, and by working hand-in-hand with sustainable farming, fishing and forestry, and believes that rewilding can mean repeopling.
