Heriot-Watt University Scientist Celebrated at 2024 Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Professor Mehul Malik of Heriot-Watt University on being named as a finalist in the Physical Sciences and Engineering category of the prestigious Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists in the UK; understands that every year, the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists celebrate nine of the UK’s most innovative scientists and engineers under the age of 42, who are transforming the fields of chemical sciences, physical sciences and engineering, and life sciences; highlights that Professor Malik was recognised as an outstanding scientist for his research focused on quantum communication, which is a technology based on using particles of light to carry data; further highlights that Professor Malik’s work has included ground-breaking research into a phenomenon known as quantum entanglement, which has the potential to deliver secure communications and reliable navigation systems; understands that Professor Malik leads the experimental quantum photonics research group, Beyond Binary Quantum Information Lab, at Heriot-Watt University; further understands that this represents the first time Heriot-Watt University has been honoured in the awards, and wishes Professor Mehul Malik and Heriot-Watt University continued success in what it sees as a critical research area, which, it believes, will advance the potential of the quantum industry in Scotland and the UK.
