Powering Futures – St Mungo’s High School
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Powering Futures for running the Challenge Programme, a 30-week free course, which engages young people in the contemporary issues of climate change and getting to net zero, whilst working with public, private and third sector partners who set the real industry problems; understands that St Mungo’s High School, in Falkirk, participated in the Challenge Programme and highlighted the importance and potential of hydrogen energy in transport, along with four other schools in the Falkirk area, which examined other real industry challenges and presented their solutions to a panel of judges; further understands that, in the academic year 2023-24, Powering Futures has engaged 643 students, across 43 schools, in Scotland during this 30-week course and offers a formal SCQF level 6 qualification to those students who partake; acknowledges what it sees as the importance of the skills developed during the Challenge Programme such as problem solving, teamwork, communication and critical thinking and believes that these skills are valuable to participants beyond the course, as they progress to the next stage of learning or into work, and celebrates that Powering Futures has been nominated for the 2024 Earthshot prize by Zero Waste Scotland.
