University of Glasgow Awards Honorary Degree to World Health Organization Director-General
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), on receiving an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Glasgow; commends what it sees as Dr Tedros's tireless commitment to improving global health and tackling health inequalities; further commends the role of the WHO under Dr Tedros's leadership in responding to the Ebola endemic and the COVID-19 pandemic; recognises what it considers to be Dr Tedros' pivotal role in reducing the rate of malaria and HIV in Ethiopia under his tenure as health minister; acknowledges what it sees as his rigorous campaigning for global universal health coverage; understands that, during his visit to Scotland, Dr Tedros met with students and researchers at the University of Glasgow to learn of their work to reduce health inequalities in the UK and across the globe; further understands that the University of Glasgow has joined Dr Tedros and the WHO to call on nations to sign the Pandemic Accord, encouraging vaccine equity and global collaboration to address the threat of future pandemics, and wishes Dr Tedros well as he continues to lead the WHO in protecting the global population from disease and responding to and recovering from health threats.
