Tribute to Professor Alain Cribier

The motion

That the Parliament notes with sadness the passing of Professor Alain Cribier, who invented the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implant (TAVI), on 27 January 2024; believes that he will be remembered for his immense contribution to cardiology, which has saved hundreds of thousands of lives; understands that heart valve disease affects over 1.5 million people across the UK and that, without treatment, can have outcomes worse than many cancers; further understands that before his innovative work, millions of people living with aortic stenosis could only be treated by strenuous surgical procedures, leaving the majority condemned to a limited life and life expectancy; believes that TAVI is fast, efficient and less invasive for patients; understands that, in Scotland, 500 lives are saved a year because of this pioneering procedure; considers that Scotland does not treat nearly enough heart valve disease patients, compared to European colleagues; welcomes the work that Heart Valve Voice does in this area to improve patient outcomes, thanks Professor Cribier for his invaluable contributions, and extends its deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.
