The Impact of the Scottish SCPA in 2023
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish SPCA for its continuing efforts to improve animal welfare during 2023, building on its 185-year history despite the cost of living crisis creating exceptionally challenging circumstances; understands that in 2023, the charity saw increases in the number of calls to its animal helpline, animals coming into its care and calls to relinquish pets; believes that the Scottish SPCA has been innovative in its approach to dealing with the issues that are driving demand for its services, and is now working with 69 food banks and partners, in 18 local authorities throughout Scotland, as part of its Pet Aid service, which provides regular supplies of essentials for pets to food banks, with plans to double the number of food banks and community larders by the end of 2024; recognises that it will also be adding veterinary support to its Pet Aid service to improve access to veterinary care for owners struggling financially; understands that it continues to grow its volunteer foster network, which allows pets to be rehabilitated in a home environment whilst creating vital capacity at its rescue centres for the increasing number of animals arriving, and thanks all the staff and volunteers of the Scottish SPCA for their efforts in running Scotland's only all-animal rescue service, which, it believes, continues to be the voice of authority on animal welfare in Scotland.
