International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade
The motion
That the Parliament commemorates the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which took place on 25 March 2024; notes that the decision to proclaim this International Day was made by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 along with the establishment of the Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery; applauds the work of the programme, and the International Day, for raising awareness of the history of the transatlantic slave trade, its impact on the modern world and its legacies, including racism and prejudice; welcomes the theme of the 2024 Remembrance Programme, which is "Creating Global Freedom: Countering Racism with Justice in Societies and Among Nations"; commends, in particular, the programme’s stated recognition of the pernicious legacy of racism, which is grounded in the false narrative of white supremacy; acknowledges the role of individuals, families and institutions in Scotland in establishing, perpetrating and profiting from slavery and the transatlantic slave trade; applauds those in Scotland who have sought to research and understand this history and to participate in processes of apology and reparation, and commits to encouraging such processes, to acknowledging and addressing embedded, structural and institutional racism and to asserting and protecting the fundamental dignity, equality, and rights of all.
