University of Aberdeen Ground-breaking MND Research

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that scientists from the University of Aberdeen, in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, have identified a new tool to detect signs of motor neuron disease (MND) before symptoms begin; notes that the tool, which uses a molecule called an aptamer, that is already revolutionising cancer diagnostics, identifies damaged cell proteins in brain tissue samples that can indicate MND before cells malfunction; understands that the tool targets diseased proteins to show where toxic clumps are building up in the body, providing greater insight into the changes that happen to brain tissue during the early stages of MND than ever before; congratulates the team at the University of Aberdeen, led by Dr Jenna Gregory, on this ground-breaking research, and hopes that this discovery can lead to earlier interventions and more effective treatments for people with MND.
