Mia AI Tool for Identifying Breast Cancer

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates NHS Grampian, and the team led by Dr Gerald Lip, on the successful pilot of the Mia AI tool for identifying breast cancers earlier in women as part of its GEMINI project; notes that the tool, which was used to analyse the mammograms of over 10,000 women, was able to identify signs of breast cancer in an extra 11 women that could not be picked up by doctors; understands that this tool has the potential to identify cancers at a much earlier stage, before any symptoms have developed, allowing for earlier intervention and more successful health outcomes; believes that this collaboration between NHS Grampian, the University of Aberdeen and Khieron Medical is an example of the benefits that artifical intelligence (AI) may be able to bring to Scotland's health service, and hopes that the results of this trial can eventually lead to shorter waiting times for test results, a reduction in workload for clinicians, and better survival rates for breast cancer in Scotland.
