Glasgow Central First Station to Install British Sign Language Screens on Main Boards
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Glasgow Central on being the first station in the UK to introduce British Sign Language (BSL) screens on the main boards and sub boards; notes that these developments are part of a plan to make the railway more accessible for deaf passengers; understands that Network Rail has teamed up with the British Deaf Association (BDA) Scotland, which offered its insight and guidance throughout the project; further understands that the latest information on trains coming from Network Rail's control room will be converted to BSL on the displays in real time, and that, while the boards currently only show train information, they will soon be able to show emergency and security messages and information that could impact journeys; recognises that there are a number of challenges that deaf passengers can face when travelling by train, such as ending up on the wrong platform or on the wrong train, especially when there are platform changes or delays; believes that these digital BSL information boards will benefit Deaf travellers greatly, improve accessibility and independence, and also give confidence to passengers that they are up-to-date with travel information and able to get to the right train at the right time, and understands that, as a result of the work Network Rail is doing at Glasgow Central, five other major stations are wanting to replicate the BSL screens.
