International Workers' Memorial Day 2024

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 28 April 2024 is International Workers' Memorial Day; understands that the day is a time to remember those who have died either because of a workplace accident, ill health or diseases as a result of work; further understands that the theme for 2024 is "The Climate Crisis and Workers' Health", where extreme weather and changing weather patterns can affect job security, safe travel to and from work, and the general health of workers, including their mental health and wellbeing; believes that working in extreme weather can cause fatigue, increases in workplace injuries and stress-related disease, as well as higher UV exposures, which can place workers at risk of chronic health problems, including skin cancer and eye damage; notes that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) annual statistics show that 135 workers were killed in work-related accidents in 2022-23, and that a further estimated 13,000 deaths occur each year from occupational lung disease and cancer caused by past exposure at work to chemicals, and considers that health and safety representatives play a vital role in keeping workplaces safe and healthy by working with employers and raising members’ concerns about working conditions, as well as undertaking inspections of workplaces to check that all steps are being taking to keep workers safe.
