Scotland's Accused Witches

Lodged by David Torrance (Scottish National Party) Standard Motion 12 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament remembers the estimated 3,837 people accused of witchcraft in Scotland, 84% of whom were women; notes that an event to mark a National Day of Remembrance for Scotland’s accused witches is taking place on 2 June 2024 at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh, which is organised by Scottish storyteller and author, Rowan Morrison, assisted by artists, Linda Morrow and Karen Strang and Councillor Sam Steele, and understands that this event is described as an artistic grassroots reclamation and remembrance of 4 June, which was the historical date of the commencement of the Scottish Witchcraft Act 1563, and commemorates all those who suffered for the alleged crime of witchcraft during what it considers to be a dark period of Scotland's history.
