Sydney Shopping Centre Tragedy

The motion

That the Parliament expresses its sincere condolences to the families, friends and communities of those so tragically killed and wounded on 13 April 2024 in the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping complex in Sydney, Australia; shares in the outpouring of international grief at the six lives lost and 12 people injured during the knife attack; conveys its admiration for what it sees as the altruistic heroism of those who stood in the way of harm to try to protect others, the rapid engagement of the emergency services and the dedication of medical professionals; understands that five of the six deaths are women, including one who was trying to shield her baby daughter, and also a male security guard who courageously tried to intervene; is deeply disturbed that this reportedly appears to be a gender-based attack and wishes for an end to such acts of violence against women and girls globally; highlights the powerful work of the Cross Party Group on Men’s Violence Against Women and Children; extends its thoughts to the victims of gender-based violence at home and abroad, and sends a message of hope as it strives for a world where gender-based violence will cease to exist.
