Broxburn Academy Pupil Emma Crow Wins Prestigious UK National Debating Title

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Broxburn Academy S5 pupil, Emma Crow, on being named winner of the Historic Association Great Debate public speaking challenge, which was held at Windsor Castle; understands that Emma competed against hundreds of participants from across the UK before making the final shortlist of 22; further understands that participants were asked to present on the topic “Which historical place or person from your local area deserves greater recognition?” to an esteemed judging panel made up of professors of history from the University of Cambridge, Royal Holloway University and University College London; acknowledges that Emma impressed the judging panel with her talk on the fascinating story of Mary Paterson, who was one of the victims of the infamous grave robbers and murderers, William Burke and William Hare, in the early 19th century; understands that, on being named overall winner, Emma becomes the first speaker from Scotland to win the award since 2008, and wishes Emma continued debating success.
