Universities Scotland’s 40 Faces Campaign
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes Universities Scotland’s 40 Faces campaign, which, it understands, highlights the progress that Scottish universities have made towards the Commission for Fair Access 2030 target that 20% of Scottish entrants to university should be from the 20% most socio-economically deprived areas by 2030; believes that Scotland has the most progressive admissions policy in the UK in support of this goal; understands that the campaign features the voices of 40 students and graduates from a diverse range of underrepresented backgrounds from all 19 Scottish universities and higher education institutions; notes the support that the students received throughout their learner journey and the importance of this in their university experience; celebrates the inclusion of Catriona Stevenson and Donna Morrison, a graduate and student from the Robert Gordon University in the campaign, and commends their determination to succeed; considers the areas identified by the 40 students as priorities to drive progress in widening access; notes the belief that, despite universities having met the interim Commission for Widening Access (CoWA) target of 16% of entrants from the 20% most deprived areas in 2021, progress is now stalling and the most difficult barriers to overcome lie ahead, and considers that it is a shared goal to equalise access to higher education and therefore encourages all political parties to work together to support Scotland’s universities achieve this goal.
