Rivals School of Martial Arts Completes Successful Community Asset Transfer in Uddingston

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the imminent opening of the Uddingston Rivals School of Martial Arts gym, following the successful completion of a community asset transfer of the former David Milne Centre with South Lanarkshire Council; notes that this will be the fourth school of martial arts for the Rivals not-for-profit organisation, operated by brothers Sam and Scott Allan; understands that, since being registered in 2016, Rivals has positively contributed to the health and wellbeing of many children and adults across Lanarkshire, including those with additional support needs, by supporting their self-development, building confidence and enabling the achievement of personal goals through martial arts; applauds what it sees as Rivals’ tireless efforts to further actively support the community through the provision of meaningful employment opportunities, with 20 staff now employed, some of whom were supported and recruited through their martial arts programme; celebrates its core values of contribution and community, and believes that these are reflected in its support for the Bothwell Community Larder, where £20 will be donated for each of its 100 founding Uddingston members, with plans to make this a sustainable partnership by repeating the donation during future membership cycles; notes what it considers to be the gym’s previous outstanding fundraising efforts, including raising over £50,000 for Chris’s House, which provides a centre for help, response and intervention surrounding suicide; commends Rivals School of Martial Arts for what it sees as its key role in improving lives across Lanarkshire, and wishes Sam, Scott, and the Rivals School of Martial Arts family all the best with their future endeavours.
