Nurse Manager, Ruari McFie, Highlights the Importance of Holistic Care for People with Learning Disabilities
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Ruari McFie, Nurse Manager at Royal Cornhill Hospital in Aberdeen, as he highlights the importance of holistic care for people with learning disabilities; understands that Ruari had always wanted to be a learning disability nurse, having volunteered with children with learning disabilities whilst at secondary school; notes that Ruari took part in a national pilot to help improve care by redeveloping the annual health checks offered to people with learning disabilities; recognises that these health checks help to educate and build the skills of all healthcare professionals, carers and others who support people with learning disabilities without specialist learning disability training, by helping them think holistically, to dig deeper into the causes of things like violent or aggressive behaviours and to decrease the number of episodes of physical and pharmacological intervention; further recognises that Ruari studied at Glasgow Caledonian University before joining NHS Grampian in 2017 as a staff nurse, then progressed to a deputy charge nurse role, before becoming a senior charge nurse, and then to his current role as nurse manager at the Royal Cornhill Hospital, and wishes him all the best with his future career on this International Nurses’ Day 2024.
