Enable’s 70th Anniversary

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Enable on the charity’s 70th anniversary, marking what it considers to be seven decades of success in campaigning for rights and inclusion for disabled people in Scotland; recognises that, having been established by five sets of parents of people with learning disabilities in 1954, Enable is now one of the biggest and most impactful charities and one of the 40 largest non-public sector employers in Scotland, employing 2,500 staff and with 12,000 members and supporters, actively supporting over 13,000 people to live independently as active citizens in their local communities; welcomes Enable marking this milestone by hosting Europe in Action, the conference of Inclusion Europe, which represents 20 million people with learning disabilities and their families in 39 countries; notes that Enable hosted the conference from 7 to 9 May 2024, and congratulates Enable on the success of the event, which was attended by over 450 people from across Europe, providing what it sees as a vital opportunity for people with learning disabilities in Scotland to discuss with self-advocates from across the continent how further progress can be made for all people with learning disabilities, so that their rights are made real across Europe.
