NFU Scotland's ShelfWatch Survey

That the Parliament recognises that Phase Two of NFU Scotland’s ShelfWatch is now underway, which it believes represents the largest ever survey of food being offered on Scottish supermarket shelves, with a view to shining a light on how and where Scottish produce is being made available to buy, including in the Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale constituency; notes that the first set of results were reported at NFU Scotland’s annual conference in Glasgow in February 2024, with Phase One having seen an independent research firm visit 71 stores across mainland Scotland to look at own-label beef, lamb, pork, chicken, eggs, vegetables and dairy products on offer in Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Co-op, Marks and Spencer, Lidl and Aldi stores, comprising more than 15,000 products; understands that the results from Phase Two will be reported in June 2024, ahead of the Royal Highland Show, with a further two phases planned for later in 2024, and that NFU Scotland will be seeking engagement with retailers off the back of these results, and considers that ShelfWatch is helpful in identifying those retailers who are giving outstanding support to local food production in Scotland or those who must do better, and that this is all helpful in allowing consumers to make informed choices about supporting Scotland's farmers and crofters.
